Yep — you’re right to suspect it. That’s Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), one of the most notorious “mystery trees” people post about.

  2. Impede the spread of lantern flies. Cut it down 🙂

  3. You sure it’s not a hackberry? Looks a lot like the one my neighbors have. I can’t get a good look at the bark. Hackberry has very warty, highly ridged bark.

Edit: never mind, just saw the flowers. 😝

  4. Can someone explain this as a whole, what it is and why its bad? I’m lost but curious. I see the name of the tree and that it promotes lantern flies, but not Im not familiar with the insect either. Assuming invasive?

Well I don’t see many good things growing here. That soil is definitely full of toxins from those big ass trees. I’d honestly poison them, then poison them again, and again until it’s a crispy peice of bacon then poison again, and cut down. If he’s renting just talk to the landlord, most landlords will allow you to deal with it being as it destroys natives. And outcompetes everything else that wants to grow. But as someone else said, drill a hole, or actually a few, and just poison until it works.

It’s so sad that this is such an invasive and vector for vermin. Tree of Heaven is one of the greatest herbal medicines. Early Chinese immigrants brought it to the USA to combat fungal infections, arthritis, and asthma. It can even break down cancerous tumors.

Tree of Heaven is still an important herb utilized by Naturopathic Doctors of Chinese Medicine. A bag of wild harvested, loose herb Tree of Heaven inner bark is actually kind of expensive to buy. I’ve seen it for upwards of $50 per pound.

I see power lines in there. Maybe the power company would remove it first you.
