Currently have black plastic edging along my limestone gravel and patio. Something isn’t looking right to me. Would you change this to something else? Staining the patio also an option

Try to make colors in your pics to set the difference.
Maybe to use plants as colors.
Placing details like artwork is also a possibility.

Staining the walk would be a nice contrast to the color of the stone. Aluminum edging would be easy to install and can be at a level to keep in the rock but not flimsy. Curv-Rite is a good brand

the colors blend together too much … if you don’t want to replace the gravel in the beds, I’d scatter some red lava rock for more contrast to accentuate the path. Could even make a 6+ inch border with some type of contrasting material.

Or … you could always stain the concrete. Something “rusty” to match the brick in the house.

Different colored rock, edge the path with red brick or darker pavers, stain the path, another comment recommended sprinkling different colored rock on top. Just needs some color contrast.

I would probably do a natural stone edging, grey or brown/red

  6. You need more than just edging. The colors are too similar and nothing adds contrast. This will probably be fine in a few years as the plants grow and add natural color contrast, but until the. You will either need to live with it or stain the walkway, or choose a new color for the gravel/DG.

I like the black edging. It kind of acts like black eyeliner in this situation. There is a lot of neutral color. Another shade would help break it up.

I think the issue is that you need 5x more plants. The edging and paving look nice and clean.

Maybe toss some lava rock in, as someone else mentioned, and add more color via plants. We buy local wildflower seed from the nursery and just spread it in our beds.

Changing the rock may be easier than staining the walkway, but it sorta depends on what equipment you have and how easily you can dispose of the rock. You’re missing contrast. The edging is fine.

I’d put some red lava rock or something there instead.

You could also get a lot more plants. Cover the majority of the ground with greenery and flowers with small spots of rock dappled between. That’s what I would do, but I also enjoy gardening as a hobby, and some people don’t enjoy messing with it.

The simple but very appealing design you have is wonderful. I would think that If you changed the walk edging you would take away the plants and their intentional aesthetic design.

You could trim with a contrasting mid-sized rock as well.  Something dark or darker river colors could be a little less harsh.

It’s cool as is; maybe some more green; thinking Japanese garden insipration

I’d remove the edging and stain the cement to give contrast

Concrete is screaming to be stained.. Already textured, give it a little more love.

No edging will make up for the shear lack of contrast between the horizontal and the vertical planes. If the goal is the elevate the space for a more sophisticated look, then you need to add contrast in one of these two planes.

Remove the black plastic edging, replace the grey gravel with something darker than the concrete depending on colors of decorative gravel (1/2″ screened). You have too much gravel or the plants are planted too high… There should be at least a 1″ drop from the edge of the concrete to the gravel. The concrete itself is the edge. And never use lava rock unless you live in Hawaii where its natural. There are too many negatives about it.

I actually like how neutral it is. Seems really peaceful. Once the plants take off, that’s a popof color with the foliage. You could get some planter pots for flowers if you want a bit of color

Mix some darker stones in for more contrast. Easy fix.
