Not a professional, but I’d skip dethatching with those samples too.

Most people don’t ever need to dethatch. Proper core aeration already helps break up thatch.

If you do I would mulch the leaves this fall and you should be sitting pretty – I feel like it’s borderline and if so I just would but I seem to be in the minority here
anwright1371
You should consider thatching lol. Soil looks great, but I would cut a few more times before winter and not bag, let those clippings get to the soil line.
EveningStatus7092
This pic makes me jealous. I tried doing a soil sample and I literally couldn’t get it more than 3-4 inches into the ground before it was rock hard

The answer to “do I need to dethatch”, regardless of your sample, 99.9% of the time is “No”. This is true for everyone.

Skip dethatching, only really needed once every few years, depending on grass type

I’d leave well enough alone if that was the plug I pulled and my lawn in the background. Don’t even mow it short, this time of year is when cool season lawn thrives.

Thanks everyone! You all confirmed my suspicions. Was going to dethatch and aerate this weekend and you just saved me a few hours. 👍

Skip dethatching. Aerate and overseed is a good plan.

I hope your grateful to have that good black loam soil! Where I live we have clay an sandy soil it’s tough as well to get nice yard out of it.

No. Not directed at you, but damn it’s crazy that this dethatching rhetoric has become so conventional.
