In recent years TV presenter Monty Don has commented on the best hedges to plant, colour combinations, and if he has thought about leaving BBC staple Gardeners’ WorldMonty Don on Gardeners WorldMonty Don has given his view on colour combinations in gardens(Image: BBC)

Presenter of Gardeners’ World Monty Don has provided some advice on colour combinations in gardens and highlighted one of his favourites that some may avoid for being “boring”.

Monty, 70, was writing in the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine when he made his suggestion for what he felt was one of the best colour combinations in a garden, white and green.

Explaining how the best partner colour for white was green, he said: “Unquestionably, the best partner for white is green.

“Think of a country lane in mid-May, frothed with cow parsley and hawthorn blossom. No garden border has ever attained that level of beauty, and yet it’s simply the perfect balance of white flowers and green foliage and grass.

“To anyone who might suggest this is boring (shame on you!), just think of the many different shades of green, and even the range of whites.”

This isn’t the only piece of advice the veteran BBC presenter has given fans in recent months as people prepare for autumn and then the winter after it.

Monty has also suggested to people there’s a very simple and cheap addition they can make to their gardens when it came to looking after their vegetables.

On Instagram, Monty suggested: “The hawthorn hedges round the veg garden. Hawthorn is much underrated as a garden hedge – very cheap, very hardy and healthy, fast growing and brilliant for wildlife.”

Corresponding to Monty’s advice, Hedges direct added: “Hawthorn hedging is a fast-growing, deciduous native hedge plant, also known as May Flower, Quickthorn, or by its Latin name Crataegus monogyna. It is a popular component of native hedgerows and a haven for wildlife.”

Away from suggesting which hedges to plant and when, Monty has also touched in recent years on when he might leave Gardeners’ World, a programme he has hosted in his second stint on the programme since 2011.

Ahead of his 69th birthday he spoke about how we would have a review when he was 70 and make a decision then, reports GloucestershireLive.

He said: “I’m now 68, I was going to stop when I was 65. I’ll now go on till I’m 70 and then reconsider.

“The reason for that is it’s not so much wanting my garden back, although there’s a strong element of that… It’s just that, whilst I’ve still got energy, there are lots of other projects I want to do that mean I can’t be here every week.”
