Hey friends! It’s time for the August Garden Tour, and there’s so much happening out here. From the front yard blooms and bulletproof plants to a few things struggling in the heat, I’m sharing it all. You’ll see:

• The star performers (hello hardy geraniums + dahlias!)
• Pots and containers that are ready for a refresh
• My veggie garden highs (peppers & cabbages) and lows (sad tomatoes)
• Behind-the-scenes updates as we prep for major backyard changes and decommissioning an old oil tank

It’s equal parts chaotic and exciting, but that’s garden life! 🌸 Come wander with me and let’s soak up the late-summer vibes together.

I’ll see you out there!
Kate

  1. I love the vision for your 'new' back garden. It's going to be wonderful to watch it evolve. Exciting. Heading into spring here so hoping the weather improves it's still really cold. I know how you feel with the wildlife. Dealing with kangaroos and rabbits here, between the two it's a struggle!

  2. What you bring to the YouTube world with gardening so so much. But one of the big ones for us regular backyard gardeners is you bring a sense of gratefulness and wonder for the smallest things in the garden. You help all of us to not be so negative when it comes to our gardens and just be in wonder and grateful for the smallest things gifts it gives us. I have seen a change in myself when I view my garden because of you. Thank you.

  3. Mixed Silverberry and bright pink geraniums, in individual pots by my front door to cover a weird area. I lifted the SB over the geraniums so it looks like one big plant. So glad to make the weird area into a charming little garden 😊

  4. This time of year is a great time to do evaluation of our gardens! Kate, thanks for sharing your evaluation and exciting plans! 🥰🌸🇨🇦 I’m excited for my Moonrock hydrangea because it didn’t do well , probably because of insufficient sun, and I moved it this year and it seems to be stronger. I absolutely love the brilliant white panicles , so I can’t wait for next year‘s blooms!

  5. Hello Kate from zone 5b-6a south of Buffalo NY. I bring you some thoughts from this 83 yr old gal who still gardens. As we pass through the seasons of our lives, we re-evaluate where we are in our gardening seasons. Change is inevitable as we re-prioritize what is sweet and dear to us. Good for you to realize where you want to spend your love and energy. And thank you for giving us permission to fail, to give joy to the smallest of successes and the excitement to try again. Well done you!!

  6. This is one of my favorite garden tours you have ever shared with us. I love seeing the challenges, successes, and opportunities through your eyes. This is the garden tour we give our friends who are working through similar things in their own gardens. It is relatable, inspiring, and comforting. Thank you for bringing us along for the ride! ❤

  7. Enjoyed your august tour – your blossoms were colorful and joyful. Yes, your patio redo is so fabulous – all the containers are looking great. I’m glad your are getting away from that large cutting garden. Just looking forward to what you will be doing with that space.

  8. One of the many things I appreciate about you is how real and relatable you are on your own gardening journey. Thank you for sharing all the things, not only the prettiest bits (of which there are many). Brian and the boys are so very fortunate to have you in their lives! 100% support your choices and priorities.

  9. Love your channel. In my veg garden I used tulle in black or white to keep cabbage moths away. It has worked great. My autumn joy growing in the sun looks like yours. My other ones with afternoon shade are excellent.

What potting soil do you use for your pots? I am finding some bagged mixes for pots and raised beds do not let the water penetrate the soil, acts like a hardpan on top.

I call my (shed) the writers hut, like Monty Don call his. When I called it that instead of shed, the carpenter, electrician, etc suddenly took extra care in the work they were doing. I am thrilled and it is now my art studio.

    Happy construction

  10. I am so excited for you! Your hard work and talent are reaping benefits. Also, it is wonderful to hear the love for your family. I'm looking forward to watching the backyard plans come to fruition.

  11. I’m excited to see the transformation of your garden! Can you tell me where you purchased your green metal furniture in your backyard?

  12. Wow!! That queeny lime orange zinnia is really impressive!!! Would you please, share the website were you purchased the seeds from??? Or even better…. Would you sell me some of this zinnia seeds? Thank you. And thank you for sharing your beautiful garden 🙏🏼

  13. Hi Kate, thank you for yet another fun, cheery and educational video…There is so much I am getting from all your videos…Thank you again for being fun and positive and cheerful and so knowledgeable…🎉🎉🎉

  14. Great tour! I hope your project goes smoothly. I had the same problems with my astrantia and geum down in Federal Way. I think I need to switch them. Your sedum out front should recover fully next year. Just cut it back to the base in early spring – or earlier if you don’t want to look at it any more this season. It’s been a strange year in the garden. Some things look great and others just don’t. I’ve never had issues with my dahlias and have been battling mites ever since our first heat wave. 🫤 Our black and blue salvia is almost 6 feet tall and the hummingbirds are loving it. There’s always a bright spot. I really appreciate your plant descriptions and recommendations – I keep a list for when I go to the nursery.🌾
