Zone 7A in NJ. First picture was taken right after mowing, second was 4 days later, and third pic is 5 days after that – so 9 total days of growth. Last pic is what it looks like after being pulled.
There are 4-5 clumps of this stuff around the yard and is very fast growing. Extremely easy to pull out, which I’ve done once or twice this summer but they keep coming back. Any identification and/or tips on how to permanently rid my yard of this stuff? Should I just remove all the grass in those areas this fall when I overseed?

Looks like nutsedge. Stop pulling it out. Get sedgehammer plus. Spray affected areas should take about 2 weeks to die.
I had to broadcast my whole lawn with sedgehammer plus because spot treatment was not enough
That is 100% yellow nutsedge. I’ve Got some sedgehammer on the way today for some that I’ve seen sprouting up in my back yard.
Seems the key takeaways before applying are to make sure you have mowed more than 2 days ago before applying, don’t mow for atleast 2 days after, and avoid applying if rain is expected in the next 4 hours.
Nutsedge. Sedgehammer the shit out of asap
Nutsedge. I use Basagran because I have it, very effective.
I used to use Ortho Nutsedge killer which comes in an easy spray bottle for spot spraying. Home Depot doesn’t carry it anymore. I wonder if it’s being discontinued. I hate mixing up a gallon for just a few spots.
Nutsedge. Don’t pull, use Sedgehammer but make sure you read the label, spraying in high temps WILL kill the surrounding grass! Don’t ask me how I know 🙁
Get sedgehammer. It’s cheap and effective. If you don’t have a sprayer you can get a cheap hand pump one for even under $20, and well worth it.
**Note:** Sedgehammer doesn’t require you to mix a non-ionic surfactant with it anymore, as it now has a granular one pre-mixed right in the packet.
Buy Sedge-hammer, pulling this will cause it to multiply faster. You will know it is a sedge if you snap the plant in half and the stem has three sides. The herbicide usually takes two weeks to go into affect. But does not kill your grass
Thanks for posting! I just started seeing something that looks just like this sprouting up in my lawn. Going to try sedgehammer plus and see how well it works!
It’s always nutsedge
If you don’t want to pay quite so much for sledgehammer you can also check out Empero. It’s not cheap but it’s a little cheaper than sedgehammer from what I saw a few months ago. Worked great for me. But if that’s all the sedge you have, probably not worth it. I had quite a bit and it only took 1 tiny scoop to obliterate all of it. But I have given it to my dad and neighbor to use which is nice.
I second what others have said, as I too once fought the great sedge battle by pulling only for it to come back stronger in numbers. One application of Sedgehammer + a month or so ago and the problem is gone and the surrounding grass looks great.
