Is this dying or just going through a usual change? It’s my first time experimenting with natives and I’m just 😮‍💨 nervous. It has some brown but then also looks like purple is coming out of it and I can’t tell if it’s blooming or if it’s dying ☹️

This is under a shade sail in my western facing backyard so it DOES get hit with some end of day sun. I can move it if necessary but I love watching the butterflies from my porch. However, there have been less and less.

None of the leaves look shriveled though…

  1. Normal part of old flowers drying out and turning to seed.

I’m pretty sure it’s just spent flower heads. You can deadhead the dried up ones to encourage more flowers to come. Mine is in the ground and looks exactly the same.

Not dying, just going to seed. These beauties colonize like this and take over large spaces of areas which helps pollinators.

If you have any other pots or soil, you can sprinkle these seeds there. Just continue dead heading and she’ll continue to bloom.

It’s normal. The flowers turn brown. You can prune or ignore it.

If you really want to see it take off… Plant it in the ground!

As said already dead head the flowers. Get this one in the ground in late September.

If you plant it in the ground now (or maybe wait a month for the weather to cool more), not only will it survive the winter but it will have new growth popping up in an enlarged area. It spreads out a little every spring!
