I live in Austin. Was told this is an Anacacho Tree. I planted it without much thought other than keeping it alive. Should I have pruned this? It is a year and 1/2. I covered it during last winter’s freeze. It suffered, but finally grew in early summer. When should I prune it? I have never watered it. Any advice is appreciated.

  1. The leaves look large but they are the shape of my anacachos. You can trim it however you want. If you don’t trim it you’ll have a more bushy form, but if you do you can shape it into a tree form. I’d wait until it is dormant in winter to trim it but you can do it now if you want. I don’t protect mine in winter but the house is north of them. Maybe others can give more info on whether it needs to be protected in the winter.

Looks like a Bauhinia but not an anaconho

I have one and it looks like that. Trim it at the end of winter before new growth starts in the spring. Edit to add that mine is planted down a southeast facing hill which protects it from the north winds and gives it sun in the winter so I don’t cover it.

It is currently planted too close to the curb and in front of the stop sign. It can easily outgrow this space and trying to keep it smaller is not a good aesthetic solution.

I agree with u/WestTexasexplorer . It looks more like a bauhinia purperea (camel’s foot tree) than our more common bauhinia lunarioides

Horrible place to plant it if the perspective is right (too close to the corner and stop sign). If this is within 15′ of the corner the city can cut it to 3′ or remove completely. The rules are more strictly enforced about plantings in the ROW AND blocking signage. Now nothing may ever happen to your tree, but you should know what the city COULD do. Depending how busy that intersection is If it gets much bigger it will likely be a problem. City contractors are not gentle in the ROW.

My advice is to relocate now before it gets to be the size where you will really miss it if it becomes a problem.

You trying to make people crash by covering the stop sign?
