“Belladonna eyes” refers to the practice of dilating pupils to make eyes appear larger and brighter, a historical beauty trend using the poisonous plant Atropa belladonna, which contains atropine. While this cosmetic use led to its name meaning “beautiful woman,” the plant’s chemicals can cause severe poisoning and adverse effects, such as blurred vision and increased heart rate. Today, the atropine derived from belladonna is still used by optometrists to dilate pupils for eye exams.

Just in case anyone comes in here saying that it’s black nightshade *Solanum americanum*, that doesn’t have the pronounced sepals present in this picture. This is, in fact, deadly nightshade,l (*Atropa belladonna*)
In the US I grew up calling *Solanum dulcamara* deadly nightshade despite it only being mildly poisonous.

It’s deadly only if you turn your back. Keep facing it and don’t make eye contact while you back slowly away.
