Hi all,

South Alabama here. Just installed empire zoysia yesterday. Aside from lots of water, what are some immediate things to do?

Fertilize? Fungicide? Mole crickets? I want to do it right so any recommendations are appreciated!

As a background I’ve never had any issues with pests other than a few ant hills. My main headache has been weeds.

Did you adjust for any drainage issues before you re-laid sod? Warm season can be tough to get a monoculture with the environmental conditions. Once it’s established mow at a good height so seeds don’t find an easy path to the ground and don’t overwater.

Keep it wet. Think it’s wet enough? Make it wetter 🙂

See if you can buy some seed from the same source and sprinkle some between each sod joint.

In about a month hit it with a roller, then again in the spring once it’s woken up.

Good rooting fertilizer helps as well, just check with the grower to make sure you don’t burn it.

Water it til it’s practically floating LOL twice a day.

really curious on who decided to lay the sod out in that pattern? and for what reason?

Water until you’re also growing mushrooms.

I would just plan to get on a pre-emergent schedule starting early next year.

  8. Everybody else said keep it wet – definitely do that. At least for two weeks, then you can dial back the watering. Fertilize in 30 days.

  9. Water, wait for it to root…..Mow and hopefully it adjusts fine.

  10. I wouldn’t add mole crickets, they’ll find their way by themselves.
