I’ve had this rattlesnake Calathea for three years. She used to be down during the day and then be up in this position at night. For some reason, she has been up like this all the time. As much as I love seeing the underside of her leaves, I’d really like to see the green parts as well. The only change I’ve made is starting to use tapwater versus filtered water. Perhaps she’s just pissed off.

But it’s lowering your self confidence as a plant mom. Isn’t it?😫

She looks so happy tho! But I fully understand, no advice just commiseration

Put her back on filtered water I think she’s pouting. If that doesn’t work I’d try a little bit more light

Might be time for a bigger pot 🤷‍♀️

Gorgeous plant!! She might want a little bigger pot and some fresh soil, might be pouting from the water change too lol you know how they are.

Did anything change with regard to light, possibly something blocking her from natural light? The leaf position changes are triggered by red/far red light ratios that happen when the sun rises and sets.

Same thing with mine! I don’t think it’s a light issue. I’ll try filtered water too. I think I will also place mine next to a fern on a pebble tray with water since both like higher humidity

Bigger pot or divide into two plants

Definitely upset about the water change. Also could be getting tight in the pot mine stay turned up when they’re rootbound

Can you take it out of the decorative planter for a few days, just to see if that makes any difference?

mine did this when it decided it needed a bigger pot. I think they start to choke themselves out at some point and can’t keep their roots wet enough to have energy to move their leaves once their pots are too small. imo repot

Well, I have no idea why they’re not lowering anymore. But I would tell you your plant looks fantastic. Mine is growing, but the new leaves are much smaller and I read Google and they tell me to try this try that, nothing’s working. Be happy your plant looks the way it does. Congrats.

what type of soil do you use for this plant? Mine won’t grow at all, I recently did a pot change and 4 of the 7 leaves died immediately.

They are suppose to lower?! Mine have been sticking straight up like yours 🤣

My grandma told me the best water to use on plants is rainwater. And it makes sense, considering it’s chlorine and fluoride-free, the pH is a little more acidic, and it carries dissolved nitrogen from the air.

Regarding nyctinasty (the movement of the maranta’s leaves), it depends on water and light. If you haven’t moved the plant, the cause may be cramped roots, which aren’t able to absorb enough water to maintain both their slender shape and nyctinasty.

Check the roots; it’s probably time for a larger pot. Your plant is too big for its current pot.

Gorgeous girl with an attitude!! You’d better put her back on the good water and then apologize profusely!

I would think distilled water only I have one as well that is a bit over three years old. I recently repotted and is growing new leaves. Yours is beautiful!

i would be so happy to see that even. all i ever see is a dead one

  18. Bilateral-drowning

When mine get like this I split them in two and have two plants.

My plants start dropping leaves when I give them tap water, so I use distilled.. but I’m a very amateur plant mom

Not sure abt quality of ur tap water, but if it has more salts then that can make the nutrient lockout in the soil …

Flush the whole soil with filtered water (pour 3-5times the pot volume with water) to wash away any lose salts etc … ur plant should recover

I’ve got a couple of Calatheas – a makoyana and a furry feather. They both have little quirks. Half of the makoyana raises and falls, just half and the furry feather has some leaves that are just ‘No. I’m not moving, thanks’
    Calatheas. Are. D1ckheads. 😁
