So I’m planning my fall planters! I found this picture and love the look, but it includes purple fountain grass. I love the grass and already bought two plants, but I want them to frame my front door, which is north facing and largely in the shade. This plant thrives best in 6-8 hours of sun. Should I plant anyway and hope for the best? If not, what would be a good substitute to achieve a similar look? Zone 8b.
I definitely want to put decorative cabbage/kale in, just need something to give it some height!

Where do you live? Here in upper Midwest ornamental grasses will all be dead in 6-8 weeks when the cold starts to roll in anyway.
That also looks like a lot to cram in thos planters. Those grasses tend to have a pretty meaty rootball
Do it. How will you know unless you just do it.
I planted six trees in a house I bought last year and the sun has scorched to death three of them this year. And I’ve been watering them faithfully two or three times a week. Making sure they do not dry out. That sun is just crazy anymore…😩
If you plant the pots for your porch, just know you will be treating the grass like an annual and it will not thrive there.
Pots shouldn’t be in full sun unless they have a dedicated watering system
You’d be better off with dried dead grass to fake it
I’ve grown purple fountain grass in the shade before and it will end up looking like that, but it takes until almost September!
plant what can take it not what you want necessarily.
