I have a community garden plot some sometimes things from previous owners pop up (like amaranth!) But this has showed up near a spot I planted in and I can't figure out what it is.

It’s called sacred datura, [Datura wrightii](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=14&taxon_id=58331). This is a native wildflower in CA. Please don’t remove it unless you absolutely have to. Datura is completely safe to touch, safe to smell the flowers, and safe to grow around other plants (including crops). It’s beneficial for pollinators, and if you come by at night (when its flowers open) you might get to see some of the really neat nighttime pollinators that visit it (such as hawkmoths). The flowers also smell heavenly and are beautiful. The one in your second photo is probably going to open tonight if that photo was taken today.

People tend to be afraid of Datura in particular, but it’s really just like the hundreds of other poisonous plants that people intentionally put in their gardens without a second thought (ie stuff like foxglove, oleander, castor bean): as long as you don’t eat it, there is no danger.

That spike ball is a seed pod that will hold hundreds of seeds each! The flowers are beautiful and every morning there’s a hundred bees in my back yard. I’d recommend cutting some down before the pods open up, as you will see the datura multiply exponentially each year

Moon Flower or Trumpet Flowers. They bloom at night. Keep children and pet from eating the roots, seeds, or vegetation. We have them in our yard in a couple of spots here in Texas. They’re really beautiful, but are poisonous.

It almost looks like a moon plant and if it is, they’re very poisonous

Datura/Jim’s in weed/“devil’s trumpet/angels trumpet is poisonous to dogs IF dog eats it. I don’t know why a dog would eat it, but now you know. The Flowers are gorgeous tho.
