I am redoing the boards in a front porch and want to prevent this from happening. The previous owners did not do any weed mitigation for under the porch. Since nothing will be planted there, is the way to go weed fabric from lowes?

  1. That’s english ivy, it’s incredibly invasive.

Don’t use weed fabric. If you’re going that route, use thick black plastic pinned down very tightly. Rip the weeds out first and douse with your poison of choice.

  3. Poison. The thoroughly spread Caseron. Several bags.

Only way to get rid of English ivy is to pull it all out by the roots. Somehow they will still hang on if you don’t get all the roots. Then use Preen granules in that area.

30% or higher vinegar/ hydrogen peroxide will stop it in its tracks. Best if sunlight can be on the plant when sprayed. Just about every commercial weed killer will also harm helpful insects and such. In 2024 the US lost upwards of 54% of pollinator bees. A large portion of them due to pesticides.

I’ve had good luck with thick black trash bags (or plastic drop cloths).

Ortho Ground Clear Concentrate once a year. Dead in four to six hours without grow back and it will keep anything from growing there for one year. I use it in my gravel beds and bare dirt areas.

    Salt.

1 cup salt to 1 gallon of water

“Salt the earth”.. nothing will grow there.

Just realize any heavy run off may bleed over.

You’ll have to apply twice a year roughly

Or just cover it in thick black tarp pinned down, not weed fabric.

  9. That’s ivy. Very invasive and fast growing plant. You have to dig that stuff out of the ground.

  10. 1. Soak the entire area with vinegar.

    2. Soak the entire area with salt. Can use pool salt. They come in 40lb bags for $8 from Home Depot/Lowes. Spray the salt down and it will melt into the soil and kill it for years. Nothing grows.

That’s gonna be an uphill battle, acceptance may be best.

I worked at a weed spraying company for 3 months many years ago, and my truck sprayer broke, causing the pesticide to sit for weeks until it was fixed (should have been drained), and developed into a super ammoniated mix. I spray some one the tree of heaven and water weed growing in my yard and nothing grew for 2 yrs. So you could go full poison mode, but I wouldn’t recommend.

Gotta get to the new shoots and spray with “woody brush killer”. Spraying the old ones has no effect

  13. I was like, “It doesn’t appear very effective.”

That’s EI my friend. Long battle ahead. Try to pull it best you can then dump a mix of vinegar, salt, and lime.
