Hey everyone, welcome back to Luminess. And if you’re new, I’m Venice. This channel is where I share my journey of intentional homemaking, uh, urban homesteading, and interior decorating. I have a lot in mind of what I want to do. Um, but only a quarter has been shown on this channel. So, today I thought we’d take a walk through the garden and do a small garden tour. Maybe it might get a little longer. And talk about some of my fall planting ideas and goals. I also like to share a bit of why this channel is called Bloom and Nest. I feel like a lot of people are here for the bloom but are forgetting that we also nest. So stick it. So I often get this question why bloom and nest like where did it come from? What does it mean? Um, I believe that the bloom part is about the growth, the growing in the garden, uh, my homesteading journey and all of the outside projects that help us be a little bit more sustainable and self-reliant. And the nest is about the home, cooking, interior design, seasonal decor, things along that nature. Also, like routines, minimalism, all of that is a part of who I am and what a part of what this channel is about. Everything I share here really falls within those two categories. Bloom outside in the garden and nesting inside the home. And speaking of blooming, let’s head outside into the garden and take a look of how things are growing and talk about some of the plants we have for fall. I’m going to go to the very back so you can kind of see what’s going on. So, when you enter the garden, this is how it looks from the side lawn. I don’t know if you guys can see that, but that’s a future thing. Um, we have here two small garden beds that I kind of just put together. I am going to be changing these flowers. So, we have here cucumbers that’s flowering, which shouldn’t be. This is the cucumbers. We grew them together uh or we planted them together. Uh this is supposed to be my backup. It was my backup cucumbers um for when or if the cucumber beetles killed our cucumbers that we have currently in the garden bed, which it did, but we’ll get to that. But I I did replant a few of them and I’m going to probably have to continue doing that. We’ll see. just kind of like as a distraction at this point as a trap crop. But we have that there. Then we have here the two garden beds. I have two salvas and I have an iceberg rose. They are burning up in this area. So this area, as you can see right now, it’s about 10:00 in the morning. There’s no real sun. It’s all shade. So it gets a lot of afternoon shade. And because of that, you can I don’t know if you noticed, the leaves are burning up like this. This could be so much be more beautiful if it had better it has to have the better area. So I’m going to move this. This is the second flush of flowers for the salvia. So I am happy about that. And then I don’t know if you can see I do have two pieces of lavender that I cut from my lavender plant. I want to see if I can propagate it. So but I didn’t want to bring it inside. So I just put it here and I’m just trying to keep it as wet as possible. And so from there we have our first garden bed. In our first garden bed, we have corn. I’m not sure if you guys can see, but the corn is extremely tall. If you see, I’m going to go up as close to it as possible. It’s tall. It’s really tall. Um, it does have corn growing, which is I’m very excited about it. So, that means it did get pollinated. And it is shading out. You’re getting me wet. is shading out my snapd dragons, which I t if you saw in I think it was like maybe two or three uh garden tours ago, I said I wanted to get my snapd dragons, you know, established and happy before the corn cast too much shade or too much shadow on it. And lo and behold, that’s exactly what happened. Also in this garden bed, you guys know we have our grapes that were being crazily attacked by the uh Japanese beetle. There’s still a lot of holes in them, but I’m thinking I’m seeing a lot more birds come here. So, I’m assum and I’m seeing a lot less Japanese beetles. So, I think my micro habitat, I think that’s what it’s called, it’s it’s working because they are the birds are now eating the Japanese beetles and that is making me happy because they’re obviously protecting my my plant. But I think I want to move my uh grapes cuz I think it’s going to take over this entire garden bed and I don’t like that. It’s sprawling like crazy, which is awesome, but and it’s gone over the trellis high, beautiful, but I want to be able to put annuals in these garden beds, and I probably shouldn’t have put a perennial here. So, I’m thinking about moving it. I just don’t know where. I want to put it along some type of fence. Maybe I will cuz I plan to remove these flowers in the beds in the front here. So, maybe I’ll put the grapes here and make them sprawl against this fence. I don’t know. If you have any ideas, any suggestions, let me know because again, I’m on the journey of landscaping. I’m pretty good when it comes to interior design, but landscaping is something that I’m definitely working on. Um, anyways, so we move on from there to the next bed beside. So, with this bed here, we have our watermelon. And I’m not sure if you can see one of them fell. So, the bottom, first of all, the cucumber beetles since that I pulled the cucumbers out are attacking. Yeah. Good morning. Good morning. How’s your breakfast today? Okay, they’re attacking this watermelon. So, I’m not sure if you guys can see like look at that. This is the bottom of the watermelon. I think I’m going to have to cut off these the top water. I will. I will. I have to cut off these leaves. And I have to make sure that I am protecting this watermelon because I have about three ones. So there was three on here. One of them fell and broke it prematurely. Yes, Cali. I know. Prematurely. So we still have one here. Yep. There’s a cucumber beetle right there. I don’t know if you guys can see that. One here. And then we just recently got this one at the top starting to grow which is really cute. I love it. We have peppers. The only other thing in this bed is we have one more watermelon which Callie planted. It is sprawled everywhere. So we have it here. We have it here. We have it here. It’s doing its thing. So there’s that. And then we also have peppers that are here. So, we have the California bell pepper and the jalapeno pepper. And then that’s it. We have a lot of space that is open in this garden bed, which we’re going to probably planting um a lot of broccoli for the fall garden. So, I’m already thinking about the fall garden. Oh, Callie’s one watermelon is producing some watermelon. Did you notice that? Look. Come look. A we’ll see if it gets big. I hope it doesn’t get too big because right now it’s on our trellis for our apple espalier which we’ll get to since we’re here. We’ll talk about it. So I put in we planted blueberries and the blueberries are over there and we pick it all day. Mhm. So I put in posts. So four posts. It’s kind of like the entryway to the garden from the house area. I’m using these posts as supports for my espalier. So, finally, um you won’t be able to see it fully, maybe towards the end, but this is how it’s looking. So, for the first side over here, it’s fully grown out. So, I’m probably going to have to cut the ends cuz it’s already past the post. So, I’m going to cut the ends for this one. And I already cut it at the top here for it to grow along the second uh the second line. So, it’s doing well over here. And then on this side, after getting rid of those aphids, those green aphids, is definitely bounced back. It’s grown so much since then. Um, it’s finally almost towards the edge of the the wire and but I’m also seeing cucumber beetles everywhere in my garden. Everywhere on every plant and it’s honestly freaking me out and pissing me off. I’m just going to say it. It’s pissing me off. Got to say that quietly cuz I don’t want my daughter to hear but it’s it’s a lot. So pray for me. If we go past this area, we’re going to go to this side where we have our tomato bed. Everything pretty much in this bed has been either harvested or pulled out except for the tomatoes and flowers. With the tomatoes, I was having blossom and rot. So I put eggshells in the bottom here. Uh it seems to have worked so far. The tomatoes that have started to turn red now are without blossom and rot. So it was lacking calcium. Yeah. So it was lacking calcium. So now I think it is either absorbing the calcium better or it is Yeah, I think it’s just that it’s absorbing the calcium better. So it’s starting to turn red a lot better and not having the blossom and raw. It there are still a lot of tomatoes. I think I’ll be able to make maybe two or three. We don’t eat a lot of different sauces, but I I will once I make it. I will make um a few sauces. Uh either mostly likely pizza sauce because we eat pizza a lot. I like pizza and then also spaghetti sauce. So, we’ll see if I have how much I have and when that time comes, we’ll do it together. I’m going to show you something. So, in this bed, previously, we had peas in here, uh, with the tomatoes, and then we also had peas potentially going up this trellis. I pulled the peas out, and I decided to use one of our backup cucumbers for this area. I’m going to show you how the cucumber looks. This is the cucumber, guys. This is the cucumber. I don’t even know if you can see it. This is ridiculous. So, yep. And I still I see a cucumber beetle. They’re killing my What plants is that? Oh, still my cucumbers. There’s all of them. Whole bunch of them here. Infestation. So, they’re over here. I’m hoping they stay over here and then I can I’m probably just going to kill them with douse them with something. I don’t know cuz then I end up planting on the side over here where we have our potato bed. I have the potatoes. They’re dying back. I did uh pull one. So you can see there’s a space here and there’s a lot of potatoes in it. So that made me very excited just from one plant. But I did plant two new cucumbers to see if we’ll be able to get anything else from them. Uh, we’ll see. I’m going be honest, I’m a little bit over it. When we first planted these potatoes, we put cosmos in the center of it. Only one so far seems to have survived. You can see it right there. Which is fine with me. Honestly, I want to use these beds for food more than flowers, but it is what it is. Also, I want to get back to my corn. With the corn, guys, there was some type of corn bug or something. I don’t know what it was, but it’s definitely was attacking or is attacking the corn even to today. Like, if you guys I’m going to show you. Why does the corn look like this? What is that? I’ve never seen corn like that before in my life. I don’t know what that is, you guys. If you know what it is, let me know cuz that is disgusting. I’m a little afraid to touch it. There are two corns in here that are not doing well. So, there was that one and then this one. As you can see, like there’s those markings. Those two have not produced any corn. And I figured let me keep it there. of whatever’s attacking it. Hopefully, it continues to only attack that and it doesn’t attack the other corns that are here. But if they do, if I see it starting to spread, I’ll just pull everything and call it a day. I feel like I’m saying this in every video, but I know I’m not the only person struggling with pests this year. Pests have been on one with everybody’s everybody that I watch or everybody I see, they say the same thing. Pests are on one. So, I am just going to continue to work through it. I’m a little I was a little defeated in my last video. For those of you that uh you know, called me out and said, you know, it will pass. Thank you. I appreciate I appreciate it. Um it has passed and now we are just letting the garden be. I always forget to show you guys this, but this is our green stock. And It’s looking really It’s interesting I could to say the least. We have in here the peppers and strawberries and then a lot of flowers. This is the chester. It’s so beautiful. I did I cut this and I made a arrangement, a flower arrangement in the house with a lot of the flowers that I have around the garden and it looks beautiful and I’m excited about it. We also have a lot of peppers. A lot of peppers growing off of this. I’m not sure if this is I think this is Oh, jalapeno peppers. We have too many jalapenos. I can’t actually eat them. It’s too spicy. And then we do have some California Wonder peppers growing in here as well as our strawberries. We are going to be making this entire green stock into a strawberry green stock. and I’m going to be moving it somewhere else in the garden and probably getting another one in the following season. So, we have under right here where we’re collecting our water, I have right underneath it some broccoli and we started these together. Look, they’re being eaten. They’re not looking the best like at all. Uh I’m going to be starting some more. It’s the green magic broccoli that we started together. And the plan that we have for fall is in this garden bed. And most likely in the tomato garden bed, we are going to be putting Okay, this let me correct myself. This garden bed, the pepper garden bed, as well as the potato garden bed and potentially depending on how quick the tomatoes ripen. These three garden beds are going to be used for fall. So, we’re going to be doing this garden bed for broccoli. And then also the grow bags that we have in front of it are going to be broccoli. We’re going to do bok choy. The entire bed bok choy cuz we killed that and it was so good. And then over there, we’re going to be doing peas as well as carrots. And those are the four things I’m going to be growing this fall in order for us to thrive. We’re going to you we’re going to preserve the carrots. We’re not going to eat them all at one time. That’s for sure. The broccoli we’re going to preserve as well. Probably just cut them up, free, blanch them, and freeze them. Um, so we can use them over the winter. And the bok choy is something that we we have to eat more fresh. I have never se I haven’t seen anybody preserve them. But I’m thinking that because we like so much broccoli, I might spread it not just in this one bed and the grow bags, but I might also move it further back with the bok choy. We’ll see. Whatever dies first. I need to start the seeds. It is really late starting some of the seeds. So, it’s more the broccoli that I’m worried about. Peas grow pretty quick as well. I need to actually put them in there sooner rather than later. Guys, I’m a little worried about this watermelon plant, but we’ll see what happens because this watermelon did it break off. It’s so small. So, it fully broke off. I’m not happy about that. But at least we still have one watermelon on there and then another one growing that I’m gonna probably support sooner rather than later. I don’t know if you guys can see that. It’s just annoying. Like the bottom of the bed is so like I made sure that there’s a lot of airflow. It is this. I could see it. The cucumber bees are like every Sorry you guys can’t see me. I’m too busy looking at the actual The cucumber be are everywhere. beneficial neotos can’t come soon enough. This year’s let’s just enjoy the garden before having to go back to work. And next year I’m going to come heavy with a plan cuz if I’m going to be a homesteader, an urban homesteader with minimal space because it’s a small backyard, I need to come with a plan in hand to get as much food as possible. So, that is the plan next year. And if I get chickens, I’m going to have to put a gate around this entire garden. I’m excited. Anyways, let’s head back inside. Inside the house, I have a few projects lined up. As you guys might know or might not know, I am going back to work. I am on maternity leave. I did have a daughter. She’s one and a half. In Canada, we get uh up to two years on maternity leave. So, I am blessed in that area. But, I am going to be going back to work in September. I had a line I had lined up a lot of projects I want to do before then, but most likely those are not going to happen before. So, we’re going to be working on them together throughout this year. Um, a few of the things that I want to do is I would like to update our powder room. Um, change out the painting, put in some like boring batten. I have some ideas of what I want to do, but we’ll get more in depth once we start tackling that area. I wanted to. So, something that I did get accomplished that was on my list of to-dos for 2025 is we were able to do this together. We put up the shelves for our coffee bar nook area. Behind me, I was able to complete these this bookcase and I did not do that with you on camera because I didn’t do with that with you on camera, which I do regret, but I love the way it looks. I love the color. If you want a little bit more information about it, just let me know and I’ll happily share it. Give me a second. So, those are a few things. The powder room. Um, and we’ll get more in depth of some of the other projects that we might have cuz they continuously pop up. I’m a person that likes to change things a lot. We’re also going to be changing our decor seasonally. So, the next thing is going to be fall. Right now, I don’t have any spring decor up, but fall decor, I’m definitely going to be going heavy. So, we’re going to be doing that together. So, if you enjoy seeing gardens grow and uh the journey of trying to be more sustainable, feeding my family for the year and and becoming a proper homesteader, potentially getting chickens, as well as projects in the house, making things look beautiful inside the house, um making things feel cozy. There’s going to be a lot of projects. stick around and let me know what you’re doing in your properties, whether it be outside or inside. I’d love to hear it. Okay, so I hope you guys enjoyed this video. It’s been It was a short one. My daughters need my attention. So, hello. So, I hope you guys enjoyed it. I’ll see you in the next one. Maybe we’ll do another tour of our landscaping cuz that is something else that I am very excited about. The plans are are there. So, I’ll see you in the next one. Bye.
