I found this small maple growing between the cedar hedge and the back of my shed, it won’t have enough space nor sunlight anytime soon because i’m rebuilding my shed. How do i dig it up to plant it elsewhere? How much root does it have, and how deep? And finally, when should i do it? Québec climate for reference.
Thank you

Hi, I am not an arborist but here in Michigan we had a weather environment where maple saplings grew every where. I made a circle just a little wider than the width of the leaves and went a whole shovel head deep and put them in a big pot and took them to my mom down in TN for her yard and they are doing great. However, most plants like to be moved in Spring or Fall here in zone 6a. Good luck, I am sure others will give you better advice.
Loosen the roots, Pull it out, dig small hole, plant it roots covered ,water it.
These tree are quite tough but if you look after it will live for a long time
Depends on what kind of maple it is. It looks like a Norway maple, which are invasive and not desirable. If it’s a red maple, it’s a good guy
It would be best to wait until you get autumn but definitely before your ground freezes. You probably won’t get all the tap root so prune 1/2 the top off when you dig it. The top will regrow along with root growth.
