Rescued this baby from the clearance section at Lowe’s, my first ever African Violet. I repotted her immediately in AV specific soil that I got from Amazon, and I know it’s recommended to use fertilizer to get her to grow. Do I put it in the reservoir with the water below?
I saw these funky crystals forming on the bottom of the pot inside the water reservoir and was wondering if the fertilizer isn’t getting through. She seems very happy in the pot and on my coffee table (big window is south facing, she’s at the very end of the table in the photo closest to the window). I just haven’t seen any signs of blooms, only leaves 🙁 any thoughts?

I think the crystals are not a good sign, but I don’t use the self-watering pots. Someone should speak up and give you advice. Did you add perlite to the potting mix before using it?
I don’t recommend taking any drastic actions, especially since the plant itself seems happy. Maybe wipe off the insert, clean out the water reservoir, refill it and see if it reappears.
I am a fan of water soluble African violet fertilizers that I add to the water and having been doing so far years without any issues. The key is to not shock the plant with fertilizers, so many sure to closely follow the manufacturers instructions. But certainly could be a fix for lack of blooms.
Wishing you the best!
