I’m planning to put some plants in this south facing, narrow border, hopefully two rows – maybe some colourful grasses along the wall, then something smaller in front. Does anyone have any good ideas on what I could put in there? I’ve put some fresh top soil in today, hopefully that was the right thing to do! 😬

that looks like an incredible wall for a climbing rose
Looks like an amazing spot!
Think you could do well with some crocus and daffodil for early in the season, muscari, tulips. I love growing cosmos and zinnia from seed because they have long flowering seasons without having to resow. You can direct sow with both as well.
Lots of them will show up again the next year, especially if you add some nutrients to the soil.
Bad time to be planting now though, you can start planting the bulbs from autumn, so unless you buy a well established plant and get lucky that it doesn’t get scorched in the summer sun you might just want to add mulch on the top and wait it out til autumn.
Good luck and have fun!
Id fill it with bulbs. Tulips and imperial fritillaries for the spring display, lilies and crocosmia for the summer display. It would be utterly stunning
The most important thing is to do “succession planting” so you’ve something nice all year. Lasagne planting of bulbs will give interest from jan to may. Could do perennials then or dwarf hydrangeas. A few evergreens to give structure in the winter.

Climbing rose, English lavender and salvias could look great and then pop in lots of spring bulbs
I would cover it in cardboard or newspaper weighted down with rocks or something until you are ready to plant in the autumn.
It’s going to be dry, so Mediterranean based planting would be my choice
Geraniums all the way. Cheap, colourful and almost indestructible. Just keep pulling the dead flower heads off and they bloom for months.
Flowering rosemary, salvias, Russian sage, bulbs – snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths. Definitely do something climbing like others have suggested! It will look amazing with plenty of flowering evergreens
I like balloon flowers, keep flowering, come back, only issue is over winter they go to nothing. depends what ur happy with
Gladioli and crocosmia at the back, and need nothing except some watering once or twice a month even in the dry like this…. Siberian iris as well for a nice grass effect with purple short lived flowers and Hebe in the front. Low slow growing shrubs. You’d probably have to think it out once every couple of years and sometimes will go the year without even needing watering if it rains (I’ve watered mine twice in the last 2 months of no rain….. And even then, they were the ones that still didn’t look like they needed it particularly)
You wont have to do anything at all with the above save watering them in well when you plant them.
I would say Plant in spring is your best bet to put them in the ground and leave them to it rather than now…. You’ll be much more restricted for choice by planting this late in the season.
That wall really is crying out for a climber… but they do need a little more maintenance (pruning and tying in, roses need good feed to look their best).

What about a classic rose and lavender combination? A climber for the wall – Gertrude J. Then classic English lavender in the border & any low space at the front rosa ‘cutie pie’. Good luck!!
Campanula!
