🌿 Shea Ricci’s Garden: A Sanctuary of Serenity and Intention | Irondequoit Garden Walk 2025 🌿

For Shea Ricci, gardening isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention. Yet her gardens feel perfectly balanced, designed to delight the senses and nourish the soul.

🌸 A Tale of Two Gardens
The front garden is a party for pollinators, bursting with vibrant colors and flowers that bring smiles to the entire neighborhood. The back garden is a sanctuary of peace and reflection, featuring:
✨ A Japanese waiting bench
🌙 A moon gate framing the entrance
🏞️ Stones that represent hills and mountains
🌊 A tranquil pool inspired by koi ponds

“This is a place of serenity,” Shea says. “This is where you let go and immerse yourself in nature.”

Her father, a Korean War veteran, often spoke about the beauty of Japanese gardens. Inspired by his stories, Shea studied niwaki (the art of shaping trees) and connected with master Japanese gardeners online who became her mentors. Over eight years, she transformed her 90-by-60-foot backyard into a calming retreat where every view feels intentional and restorative.

“You have to let go of the outcome,” Shea reflects. “I’m not hung up on the minutiae. A garden unfolds as it is meant to be.”

The Irondequoit Garden Walk is a free, self-guided tour featuring more than 50 beautiful gardens across Irondequoit, NY.

The front yard is for everybody. It’s to solicit joy. But the backyard is the sanctuary. So when you cross the threshold through the gates, uh this is a place of peace. This is a place of serenity. This is where you let go and you immerse in nature.

  1. the garden equivalent of business in the front, party in the back! I like to keep the front more manicured for everyone else to see, but the back is where I let things grow into the jungle they want to be.
