This is my first year growing sweet peas and I love them! This picture was taken today; I'd picked the open flowers yesterday, and already have some more ready to pick.

I would like to save the seeds, so I know I'll have to stop picking the flowers at some point. But I'm not sure when I need to stop. I'd like to carry on getting fresh flowers for as long as possible but I also don't want to miss my opportunity to leave some on to develop into seed pods.

Anyone who saves their sweet pea seeds, when do you stop picking the flowers?

I wouldn’t stop picking the flowers at all. As soon as you get seed pods – and leave them on the plant – flowering will cease. Much better to enjoy the flowers, take off the seed pods as soon as you see them, to keep getting flowers. *Buy* new seed for next year, that’ll be better.

  2. I’d keep going. The plant won’t die for a while yet as it’ll either keep trying to set seed or die when the frosts come. I tend to stop if it gets powdery mildew or I go on holiday and the seed sets in my absence.
