There is one job that gardeners need to complete in August if they are growing tomatoes. These fruits are relatively easy to grow in Britain, making them a popular choice for many UK gardeners. However, there are specific jobs that British gardeners need to complete throughout the year when it comes to their tomatoes. Following these guidelines will ensure that you get the ripest, most delicious tomatoes when the time comes to harvest them.

Gardner’s World has released its list of jobs that gardeners need to get done in August and tomatoes feature on the list, with one important task to be completed this month. Many tomato plants will be thriving now and the time for harvesting them will be quickly approaching. Before that happens, some tomatoes will need to ripen before they are ready to be picked and used in your kitchen or in a summer BBQ in your garden.

In August, you need to pinch out the tops of outdoor tomato plants. This ensures that the tomatoes that have already grown will become the best they can be, as further flowers will not spring.

If more flowers pop up, it takes energy away from the plant’s efforts in continuing to grow the tomatoes it already has. Any further flowers aren’t likely to produce fruit that will be fully grown and ripened in time.

Tomato plant seeds are normally sown in January, February and March, while planting happens in April and May. Harvesting takes place any time between June and October, depending on when you planted your tomatoes and the conditions in which they grew.

There are a number of gardening jobs that Brits must get done in the month of August. When it comes to flowers, there are a number of them that should be pruned in August, including lavender and roses.

Meanwhile, hedges should be cut back now so that you don’t have to deal with them becoming tangled in the colder months of the year. This job will be a lot less difficult when the weather is warm.

Additionally, the Royal Horticultural Society has said that August tends to be the hottest month of the year, so watering your plants is essential. If you plan to be away, ask friends or family to water your plants for you or come up with ways to make sure that your plants have enough hydration while you are away, like creating a moat.
