To take back control of my piece of green oasis, I got a Karcher Grass Trimmer, which is now reduced to £129 from £169.99 on Amazon. The battery-powered tool includes a 18V battery and a fast charger so I can use it anywhere in the garden without the restriction of a power cord.

The Karcher Grass Trimmer LTR 18-30 is a lightweight tool and perfect for small to medium gardens. It has a 30cm cutting width to take away long grass, nettles and well-established weeds. The machine also comes with a two-handed grip and a telescopic handle so it doesn’t tire me out while swivelling the machine around the lawn.

The battery features an LCD display screen to keep me informed on how much battery life I have left. It also comes with a plant guard to allow me to cut close to the plant wihtout harming the foliage. So how does it perform?

Let’s talk about the setup first. There might not be lots of pieces to assemble but the Lego-style manual guide makes it more complicated than it looks, especially when it comes to installing the string guard. Given the price, which is at over £100 mark, the machine feels a bit like cheap plastic. As someone who knows nothing about gardening, I struggled to fire up the machine, it took me a few tries including fixing the string and removing the battery. It would be more helpful if they have written instructions on the manual.

With that in mind, perhaps the GTech GT50 Grass Trimmer is better as it replaces the string with plastic blades. It’s currently available on Amazon and reduced to £119.99. For a more affordable alternative, shoppers can get a Bosch 26cm Corded Grass Trimmer for £30 at Argos. It has auto line feed and anti vibration system to minimise vibrations. allowing you to work more efficiently.

As for the performance, the Karcher grass trimmer is a huge upgrade from my existing shears. It saved me from hurting my back and bending down to cut the grass every two minutes. With the front handle, I can hover the trimmer to the desired area at ease and watch the the trimmings go.

I went two passes across the entire garden and it used up 29% battery. I tried getting rid as much grass and weeds as I could so I can reseed the lawn for a better chance to grow thick, green turf next year. The garden is now looking much better, neater and cleaner but I still have to tackle the corners where it doesn’t get much footfall.

A much-needed grass trimming also got rid of the scary creepy crawlies, slugs and snails. But to power up the grass trimmer is challenging and that definitely took a star away from me. Other shoppers mentioned that the battery “refused to power up” after being left unused for months – that’s something I need to observe in the long run.

Overall it did an OK job and I enjoyed the cordless feature but the price is still on the steep side despite the discount.
