Audiences tuning into a recent episode of Gardeners’ World were brought to tears after witnessing Steve’s devastating story unfold. Steve, a professional inventor who shares his life with wife Pippa, bravely discussed his health struggles during his appearance on the programme.
Throughout the segment of the BBC show, hosted by Monty Don, Steve disclosed to viewers that he’d lately been given a terminal cancer diagnosis, confessing uncertainty about his remaining time. He acknowledged it might be “two months or two years, possibly”.
Despite this, his positive attitude has remained intact, and he’s chosen to see his cancer as a “new challenge”.
BBC viewers were compelled to share their reactions to the moving segment.

One audience member wrote on X: “Stunning cottage-type garden with Windmill a bonus and unique. Typical cancer comes along for the bloke who still wants to finish the Windmill. Let’s hope he can do it and beats the disease as he dearly loves his wife. #GardenersWorld.”
Someone else observed: “Inventor man, what an inspiration # Gardenersworld.”
A third individual noted: “Well that took a sad and rather dark turn,” alongside an emotional emoji.
A fourth spectator similarly noted: “Wonderful couple Windmill garden #GardenersWorld #PositiveMindset.”
A fifth additionally proclaimed: “How marvellous to have a windmill. Love it, shall we call him Windy Miller? No, call him Mr Toad. He has the correct attitude, be positive, get up, dress up, show up and never give up #GardenersWorld.”
Earlier this year, the host of Gardeners’ World, Monty Don, shared some insights about the future of the beloved show. The 69-year-old has been a fan-favourite on the BBC programme since 2003, reports the Mirror.
Rumours have been swirling that he might soon retire, particularly in light of recent health scares.
However, Monty has reassured viewers that the show will go on for at least another two years, revealing in a Radio Times interview: “I never make plans beyond two years, but I’ve agreed to do another two.
“If the programme is made well, I’ll continue,” he further added.
This update comes after Monty had to cancel several tour dates due to an emergency hospital visit.
“I had a little spate of illness in the middle of the tour. I was in hospital last week, so I’ve been taking it easy.”
Monty has spoken about how gardening serves as therapy for him, having been diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
On Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, he disclosed: “I was long ago diagnosed with SAD, there’s no question about it, that November and December are always the worst time for me, I can’t bear them.”
In 2008, Monty experienced a minor stroke which led him to take a break from Gardener’s World and put his media career on pause.
