Used this Scott’s product on my lawn and then a couple days later I got these lines of dry spots. Any ideas of what might’ve gone wrong ? I’m a total noob to lawncare. Location is lower Hudson valley NY. Thanks in advance

The spreader you have probably has hollow wheels and accumulated the granules before dropping them in high concentrations on your lawn.

Your issue is living in the Hudson Valley. Lol

  3. You messed up by using Scotts. But you also laid too much fertilizer causing those burnt spots. Get better fertilizer, a better spreader, and follow the directions based on your lawn size to fert ratio.

Looks like your spreader wasn’t spreading so much as pouring straight down. Worse areas are where you were turning to make another pass

Too much fertilizer in one area will burn grass.

You shouldn’t typically fertilize in the heat of the summer. At least not with granular it so easy to burn. That yellow grass is dead remove it with a good rake or a electric dethatcher. Prepare the area for fall reseeding.

Anytime you spread fertilizer you have to deep water that in, you can’t just spread it and walk away. As for me, I time a storm. It starts thundering I run and spread fertilizer let Mother Nature water it in for me. If you leave the majority of what’s on the market on your blades of grass it’ll do this and burn it.

Water it deep in those areas it’ll come back.

If you have a smaller lawn just get the scotts hand held spreader..put on the lowest setting and do a criss-cross pattern..

  9. Scott’s Spreader: where half your fertilizer goes to the lawn, and the other half takes a joyride on the wheels.

Lose the push spreader and get a hand crank one. Much better even distribution and only adds a few minutes to the job. Crank and walk at a consistent pace.

It took me several years of your frustration to learn that.

You didn’t mess up using Scott’s. Your Scott’s spreader will be fine. Turn the release valve way WAY down. Then just walk at a brisk pace. Also double check how much you are using because that is not a terribly large lawn so you want to make sure you don’t over fertilize again. It looks like you were dumping a very large amount of fertilizer all at once and it burned your lawn. Additionally, read up on the best times to spread fertilizer as doing so in the middle of summer is usually not suggested.

You know you don’t need to finish the whole bag, right? You could save some for later. Your yard is not that big, and most of their bags are good for 4000 square ft.

This looks like a foundation under your yard.

  14. Everyone is sh ing on Scott’s yet not one person is sharing a better product easily available to homeowners….

Looks like you stopped for lunch and the contents of the spreader just ran out in one spot. The other burn marks are just heavy concentration. If you ever have a spill like that shop vac it up or it will burn the grass terminally.

  16. This is why I have a lawn service spread my fertilizer. I know I’d mess up my lawn.

I just can’t believe no one at Scott’s has seen these posts by now. Either they dont care or they are compltely out of touch. What a shit company.

  18. Switch to an organic fertilizer, much less likely to burn the lawn with over application.

Your culprit is right in the second picture.

    Either buy a new (non-scotts) spreader…

Or next time make sure your grass is 100% dry before application, go slow and consistent.

Ditch the Scots spreader and get an echo spreader. Much better wheels and the release mechanism is much less flimsy
