Can’t kill sedge by picking unless you pick it right when it sprouts (or dig up the whole root system). Picking it makes it worse, as it’ll break into two more shoots in the ground. Use sledgehammer with multiple apps or ortho sedge spray

Just spray it with sedgehammer and be done.

Sufficiently uprooted. It may return if there is tubers underground but that looks like a successful uproot. I have been thinning the sedge out of my lawn like this too. You got to it before maturing.

  4. You can pick it, but you need be diligent and keep after it. It may well take more than a season as you need to make sure the tuber gets depleted from pushing up new shoots.

I eventually got it under control, but it took a few years. I did (and still do) keep an eye out for new shoots while mowing and pick them as I find them. I am free (more or less) of nutsedge, but have neighbors who are not, so have interlopers who need to be plucked.

There are little balls at the ends of the roots. All you did is disconnect the balls that will regrow

It is NOT sufficiently uprooted. The nutlets are still in the soil.

Sulfentrazone is a CONTACT herbicide that will kill the visible plant.

Halosulfuron is a SYSTEMIC herbicide that will be taken in by the plant, and kill the nutlets that are STILL ATTACHED to the plant.

That looks like nutsedge and you missed the nut. It’s still there deep in the ground. Now it’ll make more nuts and spread.

Think of it as a bulb with flowers, if you continue to pick the greenery on top then the underground ball won’t receive enough nutrients to continuously push out new growth. At some point in a season or two it will completely die

I had good luck just pulling it for a few years. It came back eventually but didn’t spread. This year I decided to do the mulch thing and not bag. Suddenly I had nutsedge all over the place. Treated with Hammersedge + and it’s gone.

It will come back. Use Image nut sedge

There is no definitive answer to this that I can find. Probably need to ask a professional.

I’m getting it in my flower beds. And you can’t spray sedgehammer in the flower beds. So all I can do is pull it. I can’t tell if it’s making it worse or better. Historically it has helped (I think).

I’ve been uprooting them from the same spot for 4 months now… you will never fully get rid of them
