Came home from vacation to find kids had torn bark off our tree. A local neighbor indicated it will probably get infected and die; but google seems to indicate that it will probably heal on its own.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Leave it be. Avoid any additional trauma. Promote vigorous growth with good plant husbandry.
