Hi all – my maple, which usually is beautiful, has black spots over the all the leaves, and they are slowly dying. Whole branches are leafless now. It seems to be the lower/inner branches that are most affected. I’ve seen webbing over the dying branches but can never find any insects. It’s been a very hot and dry summer here, however I do have irrigation that runs twice a week for a short period. Thanks for any help!

The black spots are tar spot which is mostly cosmetic and no worry. The dying branches are caused by something else.

It’s maple leaf spot, also called tar spot. My maple tree has had this happen some seasons. Other seasons it’s not there at all. I believe it’s not anything to be worried about, as it’s cosmetic.
