I'm hoping you can help me diagnose and potentially save a very large Areca Palm at my mother's office. This plant is utruly massive, probably 8 feet tall, and from what I understand, it's been struggling for the last few months.
Here are the main symptoms I've observed:
-
Fragile/Bending/Breaking Stems: Many of the fronds and even some thicker stems are becoming very fragile, bending over, and breaking off easily.
-
Spots at the Base of Stems: I've noticed dark, potentially mushy spots at the very base of some stems both at very bottom and higher up.
-
Certain Trunks Turning Gray: A few of the individual "trunks" (the thicker woody parts) have started to turn a grayish color.
The windows next to which the plant is placed are facing north-west.
Unfortunately I’m unsure of its watering schedule or how much sunlight it gets throughout the day but I know it hasn’t been repotted in 4 years so there is a chance that it’s completely root bound..
I'm relatively new to plant care, but based on what I've been learning, I strongly suspect this might be a case of root rot, especially given the fragility and base issues.
I'm wondering if this indeed sounds like root rot, whether a plant of this immense size can realistically be saved, and if so, what the best course of action would be to treat it.
Thanks in advance for any insights or advice you can offer! Thist plant has been a fixture there for years, and it would be a shame to lose it.
