Is it worth trying to kill weeds in Fall before overseeding?

Yes you should be actively killing off weeds right now so that you *can* overseed in just a few weeks. You don’t want those weeds competing with your grass seedlings for water, nutrients, etc.

You should nuke: get Kill Zall from Amazon and the cheapest pump sprayer from Home Depot. Maybe even splurge and get the blue dye so you can track where you’ve sprayed. Spray whole yard. Wait two weeks. Spray anything new.

  3. Absolutely. Just make sure the weed killer you are using does not impact germination of new seeds.

I’m terrible at identifying weeds but I’m guessing that’s all crabgrass. Typically the best way to get rid of crabgrass is to lay down pre emergent in the spring so it doesn’t grow. Since I wouldn’t want to wait you can use a crabgrass killer. The one I got does not effect germination of new grass seeds.

I would spray the weed killer. Wait a week for the weed killer to be fully absorbed into the plants then mow real low. That way the dead crabgrass isn’t overshadowing your new seedlings.

For overseeding yes… but I see quite a bit of grassy weeds in there so maybe start the nuke process now and go full renovation. This way you can continue to water post nuke and to another nuke in a month. Then scalp, dethatcher like a mofo overseed and tenancity

If you’re gonna do a job do it right and save yourself the headache of doing it twice

Honestly, you should be planning for 3 applications of herbicide. This is a ~6 week process, or at least should be. If you’re going to go through the trouble of killing all those weeds and putting down seed, you should do it right. Make sure you kill as many of those weeds as you can and keep hammering them until they don’t come back. (More will still come back when you water your new seeds heavily).

Weeds yes. You don’t want to leave them there to compete with your new seed and you don’t want them creating more seeds if you can help it. You also still have time to do a heavy weed control application and still safely seed in mid-late September.
I really only see crabgrass here, so I’d recommend quinclorac or Q4 plus, if you have some other weeds mixed in

  8. Same and I don’t know wtf to do. I dropped weed and feed 2 weeks ago and speedzone one week ago. Neither did much, probably still too hot. It’s going to be high 80s the next 2 weeks. I have 2 months to first frost. So will I only have time for weeds this season and have to push overseeding to next season?

  9. When is your last seed day ? Typically 6 weeks after you kill it before you can seed or the seed will die . sod maybe 4 weeks after

  10. HazYerBak

Quinclorac is the most important part of the pesticide mix you should use to treat that. That’s the crabgrass specific herbicide. Crabgrass will not respond to a standard 3 way herbicide like trimec but they can be mixed together.

no don’t treat with herbicided. your lawn weed is mostly grabgrass. it will die out naturally. last week August weed wack grass very low scalp it. rake it up. fertilize 10-10-10 lime over seed.

Roundup it all. Twice. In the spring you apply a pre-emergent and then in the fall hit it with a post-emergent.
That should prevent the crabgrass from going to seed.

  13. But is it really ? May I ask seed or sod ? And it’s your yard so I am not trying to pick a fight . Are you going to work the soil after the weeds are gone and raked out, any layer of sand or topsoil added ?

  14. Just aggressively pull them or shovel them out. Don’t lay down chemical. Just aggressively mow as low as possible and get a rhizome grass seed… the weed will die off and over time the rhizome will fill in bare spots.

Just make sure your use pre-emergent next spring and summer.

You will want to do the weeding now, get an electric dethatcher. Then oversees afterrward.

I’m not sure where you are, and I could be wrong, but this looks like there’s a lot of dallisgrass. I’m not saying it’s not crabgrass as there are a couple of types. If it’s dallisgrass, Quinclorac won’t do anything but make it sick for a few days. I only spray warm season grasses so I’m not sure if there is a dallisgrass remedy in cool season grasses. For us, tribute total is about the only thing that will make a dent in it, but it would smoke most cool season species.

always better to kill weeds sooner than later. gives more space for new seeds to sprout and grow too. Tenacity weed killer can be applied the same day as new seed planted, but thats not a good idea considering how much weed you have.

spray to kill now.. maybe spray again in 2 weeks, then wait another 3 weeks and that puts you in mid Sept for overseeding. If you kill early, you have more options for weed killers since you’ll have a time gap between killing and overseeding

What if the is crabgrass AND/OR dallisgrass in the tall fescue? Will Quinclorac tackle the Dallisgrass?
