First time homeowner, feeling a bit overwhelmed reading this sub about what I should do for my lawn.
From what I’ve read, there’s not much point to trying to treat the weeds at this point in the year. However, I’m wondering if I should be aerating/fertilizing/reseeding my lawn, seeing as end of August/early Sept is supposed to be the best time of year to do it. Hard for me to tell if the lawn just looks thin because some of it is burnt from the heat.
Any tips? Anything I should definitely be doing this time of year? Watering would probably be good too, but I’m not sure how difficult putting in a sprinkler system would be. 0.7 acre lot

Im planning on aerating and overseeding. I dont have a sprinkler system just gonna use an above ground for now. My first time doing it. I think this is the time to do it if you want to do it
I would do something like scotts triple action this sept and next spring and then reseed next fall. Reseeding with weeds present has never worked well for me
You should absolutely treat the weeds RIGHT NOW. Then aerate and overseed in September. You have plenty of time to kill the weeds first.
Remember: many granular weed killers (ie slow release, works for 6 weeks) also stop seed germination. Choose the right weed killer if you’re going to seed this fall (September).
Why not, it wouldn’t hurt. I am planning on over seeding next week or so. Even if 10 percent grows, it’s a start. Just make sure you keep up on the watering, if it doesn’t rain. I am going with the chopped straw on bare areas this year.
I did a full renovation when I bought my house. Best decision I ever made. Fresh start with uniformity. No mix matched spots.
Spray the weeds and in 2 weeks or so remove as many as you can manually or with a electrical dethatcher. Those weeds are taking up valuable turf space you want cleared for your new grass seed.
That shed looks looks like it belongs in the movie Coneheads.
This time of year is perfect for reseeding projects and still killing weeds. Safe side go kill your weeds now in preparation, or go full blown reno and kill everything with a grass and weed killer. Get a power rake/dethatcher and clean up the yard of the dead, surface level stuff to expose good soil. Could go full maniac, and hand rake it but recommend getting something powered. Mow your existing stuff low and bag up all the crap.
Seeding
1. Throw down your seed, could roll it to get the best seed to soil contact
2. Top dress it (peat or straw or something else)
3. Put down your starter fert that also has Mesotrione (Scotts has this) *This is key as it will prevent most weeds coming up and kill some existing* Meso is safe for seeding but may cause some “bleaching” on your grass as it first comes up but will grow out
4. Keep that seed watered. Damp not soaked. A few rounds a day is ideal but not always required. Automated timers are helpful here.
5. Wait few weeks and then enjoy that first mow!
Nope not yet, September would be better time.

Depends on how hot temps are where you live. I’m planning on a big reseeding project but I’m waiting til probably mid September. In northern Utah right now we are still around 90 degrees every day. Want those temps to be closer to mid 70’s
