It's my first year of gardening in my own space, and it's official: I'm in love with my winter squash.

Sure, she can be a bit dramatic. Her leaves turn into curtains during heat waves (yes, I know that I should use a shade cloth), and she has started dropping each and every new female flower now that she has a couple of full-size fruits (and yes, I'm sure I could prevent that with a well-informed fertilizing regimen). Don't even get me started on her tendency to wander.

But I'm hooked. I dilly dally my way through my daily gardening tasks just to spend a bit more time around her. I wander over to the window to gaze longingly at her mid-conversation. I go into the office on my work-from-home days so that she doesn't distract me during my workday.

I'm planning on growing a different winter squash variety next year (currently eyeing Johnny's "Jester" delicata hybrid) but this one ("Tokyo Blue") will always have a special place in my heart.
