CRANSTON – Newport Creamery, the Rhode Island-based chain known for its iconic “Awful Awful” milkshakes, will be leaving Garden City Center after 63 years at the mall after its lease was not renewed.

The company’s lease on the location ends on Dec. 31, 2026, and is not being renewed, Janice Matthews, spokeswoman for Newport Creamery, told NBC 10’s Gene Valicenti.

Staff were told about the closure last week. The company is looking for a new location in Cranston, according to media reports.

Neither Matthews nor Garden City Center representatives have responded to multiple requests for comment.

When will Newport Creamery at Garden City Center close?

No closure date has been given.

Newport Creamery has 10 total locations

The Garden City Center location is one of eight in Rhode Island and one of 10 total. The other two are in Fall River and Seekonk, Massachusetts.

Other Rhode Island locations include Barrington, Coventry, Smithfield, Middletown, North Kingstown, Providence and Warwick.

Newport Creamery opened in Garden City Center 14 years after the mall was founded.

It has been owned by The Jan Companies since 2001, when it was bought following bankruptcy.

The Newport Creamery restaurant is in its own building in Garden City, flanked by parking on either side and across from the gazebo.

New restaurant coming to Garden City Center, Applebee’s a total loss after fire

Garden City is 90% leased, the center’s General Manager Joe Koechel previously told The Providence Journal in April.

The Applebee’s at Garden City Center burned down and the building was declared a total loss last year. Boston Market’s old location is being replaced with Anna’s Taqueria, based in Boston. It will be next to the Dunkin’.
