MANCHESTER — In the children’s meeting and activity room of the Manchester Community Library, members of the Garden Club of Manchester were working with the youth of the community, supplying the materials needed for the young gardeners to create entries for the upcoming Flower Show.
These entries will be on display in the 2025 biennial show, and included in a separate category called the Youth Division.
While the 2025 Garden Club of Manchester Flower Show will be held on the evening of Tuesday, August 5, the entries can be seen by the public in an open viewing at the Dorset Marble House Project on Wednesday August 6 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The public viewing is free of charge and open to the community.
Quite a few youth were present at the event – with a number of them creating not just one arrangement, but two.
“They get to make one for the Flower Show, and one to take home,” said club member Patricia Haubner, who was busy categorizing the entries and filling out the paperwork. Assisted by another club member, Haubner snapped identification images for each flower or piece of greenery in the arrangements, and listed them line by line on the entry cards.
Garden Club of Manchester members were on hand to offer guidance as needed, and the room was filled to the brim with buckets and containers of freshly harvested flowers and greens – tall thin stalks, puffy orbs, trailing sweeps, and everything you could imagine could be included. Imagination was the limit, collaboration was welcomed, compliments and suggestions abounded, and creativity reigned.
“My favorite part is to see the younger kids have an interest in floral arranging,” said Cara Boshart, a member of the Garden Club of Manchester and leader of the youth floral workshop. “We have future Garden Club members, future flower arrangers – and I love that we’re creating young children that are interested in horticulture and learning the design skills for the future to create beautiful things in Vermont.”
The first, second, and third place winner for the Youth Division will be designated at the Tuesday evening event, and will be on display – with the rest of the Youth Division entries – for the public showing on Wednesday.
