It provides my horses some shade when otherwise they don't get much, but I don't want it to come down on them or my fence (or my barn, but I think the way it's leaning it'd go toward the fence?).
The insect damage/rot has gotten progressed in the three years we've owned the place, but I've noticed the foliage looks healthier every year and I'm hoping it'll hang in there a while still.
My horses did not damage it- the bark was chewed away already.
Any chance we can keep it a few more years or is it time to call in someone to look at it? FWIW, in 2022 we had some dead limbs trimmed off. The tree company said it would likely have to come down soon. The next year we had work done on some other trees, asked them to look at this one again and they remarked that it looked quite a bit better than it had, and it might be ok a little longer.
I'm not sure what kind of tree it is. We're located in MI.

ASAP, can see rot, could damage shed or worse, not worth risk. Plant new tree.
If I’m seeing mushrooms at the base of that tree like I think I am, I would not put it off much longer.
Yesterday.
If you plant another tree (or a row), I’d put it outside the area so it can eventually provide shade. Along with water, tree roots need oxygen. Compacted soil has a difficult time absorbing water. As water drains thru a soil, those spaces get filled with tiny spots of oxygen.
