Could be tree of heaven
I never saw one of those in New England, but that was many moons ago
Didn’t encounter the piece of junk tree of paradise until I was in Maryland but they may have spread north since.
Crush a leaf in your hand
If it smells fresh and kind of citrusy it’s sumac
If it smells like crap it’s TOH

Is that also Poison Ivy at the bottom right of pic 2?

The neighbors across from my parents in Chicago planted one of these on their front lawn. Seriously, they planted it on purpose.
I don’t think they realize how fast and huge it will grow. It’s funny because they were imported from China as a decorative plant, and they just blew up and took over. Every railroad track around here is bordered by thickets of these things just growing wild from seed. I pull them up as seedlings in my garden, and the closest one I know of is a couple blocks away. These things will grow anywhere.

Its also the preferred host of the spotted lanternfly.

If you rip off one of the leaves and it smells like peanut butter, it’s definitely tree of heaven, which is all over MA. Absolute nightmare to deal with.

Let it grow another month. Buy some herbicide like triclopyr. When it starts getting a little colder make slits along the base and put the herbicide on the wounds and wrap it in plastic wrap. At this point the tree is going to try and boost its root system and send the herbicide straight down and kill it. Probably the easiest way to get rid of it.

It’s not tree of heaven because the leaves don’t have the thumbs that tree of heaven has. I’m thinking it’s a walnut tree but it’s hard to tell with these photos. It could be sumac.

Op, rub the possible Tree of Heaven leaves between your hands and take a big wiff – if it smells like bad peanut butter, you have Tree of Heaven on your hands (literally).
