I'm not trying to bias opinions, but do those leaves on the the fruit look like persimmon? But the leaves look different. Son brought it home, if it's something cool I'll go get some more fruits when they ripen and cultivate it.

Persimmon
Yeah it’s edible.. but god help you if you eat it before it’s ripe. It causes an absolutely terrible sensation on your tongue lol. Super astringent
A very unripe wild persimmon. Do not ever eat one until it turns an interesting purple-orange. They are astringent as hell until they are fully ripe. But man, a ripe American persimmon is one of God’s greatest gift to those who take the time to wait til they are ripe…
I was always told that the best time to pick ripe persimmons is after the first frost. But, they are usually good and ripe after they fall from the tree. They’ll be very squishy, pale orangish. I grew up around several persimmon trees. I regularly saw scat with the seeds in it from animals chowing down on them. They are good for making preserves, added to poundcake batter, pies, and probably a whole lot of other recipes. You can ferment them to make an unusual wine.
Persimmon. Edible but astringent. Turns a kind of peachy-orange when ripe. Makes good jelly.
Definitely a persimmon.
In Virginia/ Maryland they are usually ripe end of September
If you want to harvest, make sure you collect any decent looking windfalls- they drop when they’re ripe. The simplest way to process is to clean them off, drop them into a sieve, and mash them through with the back of a spoon. They’re very seedy fruits, but the seeds are big. The processed pulp freezes well if you don’t have much at any one time.
Personally, the best thing to make with persimmon pulp is persimmon pudding. It’s like a thick baked custard. You just put a dollop of whipped cream on top.
And kind of like avocadoes, if you let the pulp sit out in the air, it’ll turn a rather nasty greenish brown. Still perfectly edible, but it just looks really, really unappetizing. My MIL makes persimmon drop cookies and after a couple days they look like they’re not cookies, if you get my drift.
Go ahead and try and make some persimmon pudding with them green things 😆
Persimmon picked too early
I’ve only ever had Fuyu persimmons, do american persimmons taste similar?
Not now!
everyone needs to experience an unripe parsimon once in their life. It’s gonna change you
What part do you have an urge to eat?
Diospyros lotus, but it’s not ripe
