There are a ton of smaller roots that are growing across the big roots, are these all roots that could cause issues? Assuming I should cut them all off but don’t want to over do it. Going to remove the grass another couple feet to make a big mulch ring

    Yes – not big enough to cause any issues yet, which means now is the perfect time to cut them.

    Root on root tissue is fine, the tree will either graft these together or they will die naturally. It is when root tissue is against trunk tissue that you will have a problem- girdling roots.
