Asking if it would be effective to just roundup my whole backyard, all of these weeds, and then throw down grass seed after. I’m renting and also don’t want to put a lot of time or effort into making this pristine. Just hopefully better than this. I’m not looking to buy or rent equipment either, aerate or anything. Just kill it all and add seeds. If this wouldn’t be effective, then I’m just going to hack it short occasionally and leave it be. Appreciate any advice anyone has from experience. I’m in the KC area if that’s relevant. Thank you!

Hit it with a string trimmer, remove the majority of the plant debris. Then, till the soil and apply seed.

Yeah, you can use round up if you hate your life. Why not?

No. The round up will make it so nothing grows in that spot for quite some time. You’re going to have to put in a little work to fix this, but it’s really isn’t bad.

If you’re renting the landlord should have a lawn service and you have to do nothing.

Roundup will kill all of this. Maybe a second coating after about a week. Minimum you’ll need to rake it to loosen some soil. Then grass seed and straw covering.

You could spray it with Roundup and overseed it a few weeks later. You’ll get a little bit of grass. That’s with no prep, just out of sure luck. You’re throwing away money if it’s not yours.

Wait till ~ 2 weeks out from prime grow season. Wack it. Till it / turn soil. Mesotrione it. Seed it with some starter fert and water it. Done

I’m also curious as I’m in the KC area and mainly have a crab grass lawn. Isn’t it too late in the year? Everything I’ve seen says do it early spring.

Put a little 2 4 d in with the roundup will really help , keep away from tomato plants

Yes. You will need to get seed to soil contact tho so after it’s all dead, you will need to take out the dead material, leaves, etc. . Get down to the soil. Then throw down the seed in September which will reduce competition from weeds.

you have to put a little effort in if you want any result .

Ground clear poisons the soil for a while so you won’t be able to grow good grass if you do it that way. If you cut it down and pull major roots/till you’ll have a bed you can immediately seed.

Looks small enough that you can pull these weeds and then seed. You’ll need to pull the dead weeds anyway.

I had a back yard like this, I cut it all down and then put down black plastic sheeting. Use sand or something on the edges to seal it down and let it bake for a few days in the hot sun. The temps will get so high it’ll kill all the vegetation and even the seeds. Then till it up and toss down seed.

If this were mine, I would mow it with a bag to collect as much vegetation and seeds as I can. Then I would hit it with glyphosate if you wanna start over like that. After 10 days, mow it again with the basket and water it lightly for a few days to bring up any new weeds then nuke it again once you see the new weeds or weeds, you may have missed coming back. Couple days later put down the grass seed.

  16. Look into Tenacity first. It has some advantages over Round-Up

Mostly looks like crabgrass which is a different process because it’s an annual. Mow very low, overseed in fall, water regularly to establish, preemergent herbicide in spring. Next year you can use roundup for the stray weeds if you don’t want to pull them.

Yes but there is a waiting period before you can plant new seed or the residual chemicals from round up will kill the new grass as it sprouts. Usually 21 days
