How would you tackle this come early fall? Core aerate/dethatch and overseed with starter fertilizer? I had lady’s thumb but it all died, now it’s crabgrass. Originally planted tall fescue, summer killed many spots but some spots have grass.

Also, I planted new grass in Spring so it hasn’t even been 4-5 months since we put first round of seed ever

I would fence off 1,000 sq ft and forget the rest exists!

That’ll be a big job to get the perfect lawn, but I would absolutely go with core aeration and seeding. Ensuring the seed stays moist will be your biggest challenge if you dont have sprinklers

  4. Id plant a lot of native trees and plants, Arbor Day Foundation will send you 12 bare root trees if you donate a few dollars

Honestly it depends on where you live. Then decide how crazy you want to get with irrigation, then based on that I would pick a grass type. Over time with overseeding, fertilizer and weed prevention you can get it pretty good. If you want it to be very nice you need to install irrigation and nuke it for the fastest results. Will take a lot of effort to get it really nice but some simple steps will get it from that to much nicer. I think watering will be the biggest struggle, assuming you live somewhere that isn’t constantly wet. Looks like a lot of full sun exposure. Good luck.

Choose a small area you’d like to have near the house and plant clover everywhere else. The wildlife will thank you

Buy a tow behind sprayer. Spray the entire yard with tenacity. Overseed in fall. Apply another application of tenacity 4 weeks after.

Kill it all with glyphosate late August, then rent a core aerator. After that, seed with a high quality grass seed using a slit seeder in early September. Home depot and rental shops have the equipment.
