Please no judgement on our strawberry patch. It’s been a rough year. So while I was lamenting the crabgrass, pokeweed, and maple seedlings that have taken over my once proud patch of strawbs I noticed this big leafy red sprout. My plant id app just got me the family of gingers bananas alliums. I’m going to pull it no matter what it is I’m just curious bc it isn’t one of the usual suspects around here. Has a very tropical look.

Canna lily is my guess, if you live somewhere that doesn’t freeze

Cannas can survive some freezing weather, they come back from the roots. I don’t remember what the lowest ground temp is that they can survive. I grew them in Oklahoma and heavily mulched the roots after the leaves were killed by frost.
