The split started a few years ago but after the last couple recent storms it's gotten worse and hasn't healed at all since it first started. Tree is otherwise healthy, no dead spots.
If it’s worth the cost to you to retain it, you could probably reduce, cable, and brace it. If not it will fail at some point, but it doesn’t look like it’s likely to harm anything/anyone.

Yeah, this hackberry has seen better days. Unfortunately the tree isn’t going to heal from this. You could mitigate the risk of failure with weight reduction on the canopy, cabling and bracing. Tree looks like it’s in a low to moderate traffic zone. It also looks like there isn’t much for the tree to take out other than the smaller surrounding trees and swing set. It’s a low value tree so honestly you’re probably better to spend your money on tree removal and replanting.
