This is my lawn. It’s tiny, but it’s mine. I’ve never had a lawn before. It seems silly to invest in a gas mower for this. Do you think a “reel” mower can do the job?

Reel mowers only downside is they are horrible if you let it get long

the problem will come when you let it overgrow, it takes a lot of elbow grease to work with a reel one

reels give premium cut but come with their quirks. i have three.

  4. A reel mower can do the job, but can you?

I started with a reel mower and the best of intentions, it did a great job, but it just wouldn’t cut after about 2.5 inches. So when I would travel in summer and the grass shot up, I’d have to hire someone to knock it back down. After 2 years, I broke down and bought an electric mower. Though I can maintain it at much higher heights now, so there was more than one advantage.

A reel mower will work. But they can be tricky to maintain and keep sharp. If it were me, I’d be looking at a small electric mower for that. Or better yet, hire a landscaper.

Yes it works great just cut often during the growing season especially spring and fall. It gets tall and you will have a workout. Don’t let it grow more than 2 inches between cuts.

I cut a yard that size for years with an electric string trimmer and an attachment that looked like training wheels.

I didn’t have a garage to keep a mower in.

I’d get a Ryobi electric. I have around 5000 square feet of grass, and I really enjoy it

A small electric mower might be a good choice. Maybe a brand where you can switch out the battery with other tools you may find useful, like an edger and blower.

Reel mowers work fine. Especially for a smaller lawn like this.

A small battery Ego would do the job too. Do you have a shed or garage?

Get an electric rotary mower! You could do an 18v but a 40v would really get the job done. Reel mowers are fun and give a really clean cut until you want grass taller than 2 inches.

To be honest a good reel mower costs about as much as a “cheap” gas mower. I did 4000sq ft of zoysia with a fiskars mower for about a year (it was new sod) but once the zoysia hit its stride I couldn’t power through it any more. It also didn’t cut weeds so usually I had to go back and weed whack or spray. There is also no suction so over time grass has a tendency to lay flat. I would think it could work for a small fescue lawn or even ryegrass.

Go get a Ryobi electric. They are affordable, and the perfect use case for what you have. 40v also. The folks who rag on electric usually have big lawns or do it commercially, where electric doesn’t have a place. Small city and suburban lawns are perfect for electric.

Reel mower works great, my front lawn is twice this size and I do it with a reel mower, max cut height is 2.25inches so it does mean I’m cutting twice a week in spring and fall but it takes me 15-20 minutes, I can also cut it when it’s wet, if it gets long I double cut it which is 30minutes

Before we bought this place, our lawn was probably a little over 3000 sq ft. I had no trouble keeping up with it with a manual reel mower. Got some exercise, and really enjoyed it too.

Get electric !!! Light weight and don’t need to worry about maintenance. Just always remember to take off the battery and store it in a cool place. Also you’ll have to replace the battery every 5 years or so. But you won’t have to worry about gas, oil changes ect ect

I have a… I think it’s called American push reel mower that I’ve been using for my new fescue lawn. It’s great! But my Bermuda in my front lawn needs power, so I got a gas mower.

Get an electric one and then you can use those batteries for other outdoor tools.
