Just moved into a new place and found that the previous owners made a pile for grass clippings which has been building for 10 plus years. Is there anything I need to do to use this as compost? It looks good when I flipped it over a few times and there are a few mushrooms growing out of it. TIA.

Pee on it, so it knows it’s new owner.

if its all grass cuttings, its very high in nitrogen, but nitrogen is very mobile and maybe most of it soaked into the ground water, its good organic matter for the biology in your soil to eat, these bacteria will break it down further and make plant ready soluble nutrients that your plants will gladly up take. I would some biochar incase the past owners used herbicides on the lawn and then cut it and put it there. If you add biochar, there is a very good chance the biochar will absorb most heavy metals and contaminates, if any in that compost, just be careful, you have no idea what that person did to his lawn, so putting on veggys you eat might not be such a great thing, grass will suck up anything, there like giant filters, sucking up what’s ever next to their roots. if your putting on bushes you dont eat, that’s great
