We are VERY slowly making the move to Less Lawn. Please understand that we are absolutely not gardeners. Neither of us has a single bit of decorating ability. If we can't directly copy – or hire someone to tell us what to do – it's a hot mess. On the right of this picture is about 10 feet of wildflowers that I planted 3 years ago from a mix. They are gorgeous in the spring, but really straggly by this time of the summer. The wood chipped part is currently solar baking. There's cardboard and vinyl tablecloths under it to kill the grass for planting next spring. What you can't see are the three purple coneflowers, three black eyed susans, and some wispy kind of marsh grass that we planted. You mostly can't see it because our hellhound keeps running through it and squashing any blooms the moment they try to be pretty.
I need inspiration, y'all. And advice. Help!

It’s not fully native; I get it so full by using clover as mulch. But also by using things that have staggered active times. This year bloomed my bulbs, then creeping phlox, then irises, and now the picture you see here. That’s all crammed into about 12 by 4 feet. Having things look raggedy is an invitation to add more.
The area you have mulched is pretty big; do you have a big plan for it? Do you want to talk about it? What sort of goals or questions are on your mind?
