Hi y'all – I'm leaving town on Saturday and will be gone until Friday, 8/1. Right now I have two cantaloupes that are ripening but not quite ready to pick, and I'm afraid they'll just rot on the vine while I'm gone! Any tips besides asking someone to stop by and check on them?
Next question: I have a lot of plants in containers in my backyard and I'm looking for DIY passive watering solutions to set up for them. We do have a sprinkler system that will run on our two watering days, and my big vegetable bed has a soaker hose that I'm going to set up on a timer. But for these grow-bags and pots – is there some kind of poke-holes-in-a-water-bottle sort of solution that could work?
TIA!

  1. For container plants I have put them in a kiddie pool that was partially filled with water. They self watered until the water ran out, which was enough time for me.

If you have a hose spigot near them, you can buy a battery operated timer and set a watering schedule with a drip irrigation system. Search for “Orbit hose timer” on your store of choice to see the options.
