LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Students from Aquinas High School rolled up their sleeves at the Kane Street Community Garden, spending an afternoon planting, weeding and harvesting fresh vegetables for local families in need.
The volunteer effort was organized through the school’s Impact program, which connects students with community service opportunities throughout La Crosse. The fresh produce harvested by the students goes directly to local families as part of a broader initiative that has already delivered more than 31,000 meals in the community.
“I’m very excited to be working at the gardens today,” said Addison Walker, a student volunteer. “I like hang out with friends and do things for the community, especially just helping other people.”
The afternoon of service allowed students to work together while making a difference in their community. For many participants, the experience offered both personal fulfillment and a chance to build connections with classmates.
“It is great to be of service to the community, and it is so much fun to do with everybody else at Aquinas,” said Quinn Williams, another student volunteer. “It helps you get to know people at school and in the community as well.”
The volunteer work comes at a crucial time for the program, as many upperclassmen are set to graduate next year. School organizers are actively encouraging younger students to step up and take on leadership roles in community service initiatives.
“I would say do it, its not a chore or anything your honestly helping people out in the world and your own community and its actually really good work that you’re doing,” Walker said.
The Impact program has established an impressive track record of community engagement. Beyond delivering meals, the program has logged well over 115,000 hours of service to the La Crosse community, demonstrating the sustained commitment of Aquinas students to local causes.
The students plan to return to volunteer at the community garden again later this summer, continuing their efforts to support local families while building lasting connections to their community.
