City did utility work on our block and tore up our yards to get to the pipes. After months of dealing with that, they planted this “grass” for us. This is the first time I’ve dealt with this, so I was wondering, WTF is this? It doesn’t look like grass to me? Let me know!

Looks like a squash vine from here. Either way, I would argue that it is indeed not grass. Wow.

Button weeds and crabgrass, seed can survive years in undisturbed soil.

  3. Don’t say anything until after you’ve harvested the pumpkins in the fall.

  4. I’ll bet $5 there are pumpkins by October 🎃

City did similar to me a while back and it all grew back as weeds and crabgrass. Huge pain in the ass to fix

Any seed they planted failed, so what you’re seeing is what popped up from the ground disturbed seed bed.

The soil wasn’t sanitized(cleaned/treated?). Fr tho.

I’m sorry no one has been able to give you the correct answer yet. This plants common name is Velvet Leaf – Latin name – Abutilon theophrasti.

If you pick a leader off it feels velvety soft. It’s a terrible invasive but the birds love the seeds. I wouldn’t be surprised if those seeds either got into a mix or were already there and germinated when turned.

Either way you need to spray or pull those things before they go to see or you’ll be chasing them all around your yard and the neighborhood for the next decade.

  9. The straw and cheap grass seed carries tons of weed seeds need blue tag certified weed free grass seed but they are NOT buying that

This exact same thing happened in my neighborhood. Village replaced a lot of curb as part of roadway rejuvination, and the contractor put down fresh dirt in the gaping holes and topped with straw blanket, but before grass seed could take, these weeds exploded out of the ground.

I couldn’t tell you if the contractor had these weed seeds in their materials already, or if wind blew the seeds in and took over. I think the latter.

Dormant seeds in soil that was brought in.

As stated above, it comes in the topsoil they backfilled with. Happens all the time.

  14. Royal empress trees, paulownia tomentosa. Invasive plant, prob not intentional

I get shit like this all over my neighborhood after the city does work. They throw down seed, homeowner does absolutely nothing to care for it and give the grass a chance, then massive tree like weeds eventually sprout and take over. Multiple neighbors will mow around the areas and just let the weeds keep growing like it’s a feature. I don’t understand.

Hodgepodge seed mix they bought in an alley somewhere
