I was today years old when I learned of the existence of this fruit native to Mexico and Central America called the cucamelon or Mexican sour gherkin.

And, I'm wondering if anyone has tried growing it here in Austin.

And, if so, what was your experience? any lessons learned?

TIA

They grow extremely well. They will spread. So just take that into account when you plant them

Currently growing them! The one plant I have is spreading a lot and seems to be loving this heat. I did struggle to germinate and keep the seedlings alive. I grow a lot of my veggies from seed but the cucamelons have always had a high rate of dying while still very small. Hopefully I’ll be getting fruit soon and will be rewarded

They volunteer in my yard occasionally. Never found out where they came from, but when they’re there I’ll snack on them a bit. Made teeny little pickles one year.

I have had a bird plant them and they just grew themselves. A very hands-off vine, and SO cute. They do spread, as others have mentioned, but they are adorable so who cares.
