I was thinking about filling with river rock, which I have a lot of. The top dressing with sand and letting it filter through. Or maybe sand first. My partner is worried about mosquitoes breeding there after a rain. So I need a better idea. Any suggestions?

Also anyone commenting on the saint Augustine, there is less each year.

Recent history aside, if your soil drains well and there’s some sun, you won’t have standing water for long enough to breed mosquitos after rain.

Think long and hard about river rock, you’ll never get rid of it if you lay it in an uncontained way like that and lawn mowers/weed eaters will just launch mineral missiles all over your yard for time immemorial. It’ll also get immediately filled with grass and weeds. You could try to put some kind of edging down?

If you can fill it with topsoil and seed to match the lawn honestly that’s your best bet, or I’d mulch it. Biggest thing though is don’t create a grade back onto your deck.

Hilariously, St. Augustine is a Texas native grass
