Saw this whilst walking in the woods and not seen anything like it – European horse chestnut in London, any ideas what causes this and why the symptoms only present on a few stems?

This isn’t what I’d expect with a London Aesculus. We’re about to hit leaf miner season and it so hot and dry I’m worried they’re all going to look autumnal by mid august again.

If the discoloration is only in a few small stems, I’d guess the tree is reorganizing its lowest canopy and reabsorbing any goodness from the sacrificial limbs

If it’s all over the crown it’s probably chlorosis, brought on from a lack of particular nutrients

But it bet on the first option. It’s been dry and hot in London lately. Where I am trees are quite stressed and trying to keep it together. A bit of die back in the lower crown is nothing to be worried about with these condition
